Going to Sneinton was such an eye-opening experience for me, to see the vast amount of events on offer for the residents; and meeting with Alchemy was a great opportunity to see how the organisation could connect the dots and bring people that do these great things in the community together.
Unfortunately initially arriving in Sneinton I did not have an inkling of how many great things were on offer for the residents; the Windmill, St. Stephen's Church and the vast amount of history and heritage in Sneinton, and perhaps to the random passer-by this might also the case, however from the community perspective I felt a sense of pride and passion regardless of this.
For me what was most admirable to see; was the allotments that Stevie ran, his down-to-earth attitude and how he lived to give back to the people that didn’t fit into the ‘social norm’ but have great talents that are often hidden and not celebrated because of their financial problems or addictions. Looking at the people Stevie was helping it was obvious that these are people have seen rough times, but the allotments were a source of life and enjoyment in the area for them.
What drew my attention in Sneinton was that although I saw the buildings that were used for events in the year what I thought would be nice for me to see was an a central area that could be used for the community to relax or unwind on a daily basis.
Sneinton although there are issues, has a wealth of talent and passion and the people are knowledgeable and intelligent, it would be a great thing to showcase. They have achieved a lot on their own, but I think the biggest help and encouragement they enjoy is our time, it was wonderful to see all they have achieved!
