CARRINGTON

WHAT?

 CARRINGTON AIMS >>

Our project within Carrington is based on the idea of creating a sense of identity, as well as improving the areas for the community. Participation and interaction form the heart of the project, as we aimed to create a new space for the community, designed by the community.

how?

In order to design a successful space and to generate a sense of identity, we attended several community-based events to start a conversation about the identity of Carrington. The main event we held was a community ‘street party’ where visitors were asked in different ways to interact with our project, giving their thoughts, opinions and even designs for a community space.

With meetings taking place in various locations within the city, the project kicked off with meetings with Sneinton Alchemy and Carrington Tenants and Residents Association. We aimed to gain a brief introduction to the areas, an insight into the great work the organisations are doing and to start a dialogue focusing on how we can work together for the community in a way to help gain a sense of identity as well as improve the areas.

SNEINTON ALCHEMY

>>

Sneinton Alchemy defines itself as  a "CIC (Community Interest Company) run by locals that work for the benefit of the community, to improve the neighbourhood and support local enterprise". The group engages with the community in many different ways through projects and events in order to help develop the area and create a sense of identity.

The Carrington Tenants and Residents Association

work on different projects in the Carrington area. With a community garden at the heart of the association, the group were keen to expand projects and get involved with our project.

In 2010 the association created history trail, a detailed guide to the different history of buildings and areas of Carrington. One of the main routes into the area is through a passage leading off Mansfield Rd, this is an area which has already had work done on it in the form of a colourful mural, mosaic bench and shrub border.
